{"id":430,"date":"2008-10-03T21:44:02","date_gmt":"2008-10-04T01:44:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dandunn.org\/blog\/?p=430"},"modified":"2008-10-04T10:55:06","modified_gmt":"2008-10-04T14:55:06","slug":"bike-rack-at-alewife-fails-at-two-weeks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dandunn.org\/blog\/2008\/10\/bike-rack-at-alewife-fails-at-two-weeks\/","title":{"rendered":"Bike Rack at Alewife Fails at Two Weeks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mbta.com\/about_the_mbta\/news_events\/?id=15741&amp;month=&amp;year=\">much fanfare<\/a>, the MBTA announced the availablility of secure bike racks at Alewife station two weeks ago. \u00c2\u00a0At the time I was <a href=\"https:\/\/dandunn.org\/blog\/archives\/419\">guardedly optimistic<\/a>, but worried about maintenance. \u00c2\u00a0I should have know better; the MBTA can&#8217;t keep anything in working order. \u00c2\u00a0How secure is a bike cage with a door that won&#8217;t close?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dandunn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/img_0185.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-431\" title=\"img_0185\" src=\"https:\/\/dandunn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/img_0185-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dandunn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/img_0185-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/dandunn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/img_0185.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I first noticed the problem last week, on the 26th. \u00c2\u00a0As I approached the cage I noticed that it had far more bikes than any other day so far. \u00c2\u00a0As I got closer, I realized the door was open!\u00c2\u00a0It wasn&#8217;t wedged open or anything; it just hung there loose, swinging in the breeze. \u00c2\u00a0I looked to see if there was any obvious vandalism but didn&#8217;t see anything. \u00c2\u00a0I parked my bike and went down to the station. \u00c2\u00a0I found an MBTA employee and told her about the door. \u00c2\u00a0She said she&#8217;d have someone look at it. \u00c2\u00a0When I returned to the cage (not the same day), it was fixed. \u00c2\u00a0I didn&#8217;t blog about it because I figured it was a minor snag.<\/p>\n<p>Today when I parked my bike, the door was open again. \u00c2\u00a0It wasn&#8217;t swinging loose, but the door would only close part way. \u00c2\u00a0You had to push it closed. \u00c2\u00a0I again looked for vandalism and didn&#8217;t see any.<\/p>\n<p>Again, i went down to the station and found an MBTA employee. \u00c2\u00a0I told him the problem. \u00c2\u00a0He replied that he&#8217;d called the problem in, but no one would fix anything. \u00c2\u00a0He went on a long rant about mangement, two years without an employment contract, bad faith negotiating, $300,000 bike racks, four-foot door hinges on five-foot doors, and repeatedly told me that I shouldn&#8217;t hold my breath for a fix. \u00c2\u00a0At 7:30 tonight I got back to Alewife. \u00c2\u00a0I can&#8217;t say I was surpised to see the door to the bike cage hanging open.<\/p>\n<p>So, what do you think? \u00c2\u00a0My bet is that it gets fixed again later this month, breaks again later this month, and is left to swing loose until it is permanently damaged by vandals. \u00c2\u00a0Any takers? <a href=\"https:\/\/dandunn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/img_0196.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-432\" title=\"img_0196\" src=\"https:\/\/dandunn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/img_0196-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dandunn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/img_0196-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/dandunn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/img_0196.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With much fanfare, the MBTA announced the availablility of secure bike racks at Alewife station two weeks ago. \u00c2\u00a0At the time I was guardedly optimistic, but worried about maintenance. \u00c2\u00a0I should have know better; the MBTA can&#8217;t keep anything in working order. \u00c2\u00a0How secure is a bike cage with a door that won&#8217;t close?
