Obama is going to be President. \u00c2\u00a0That’s a big historical milestone for our country, and I’m glad I could witness it. \u00c2\u00a0On a more tactical level, I can’t say that I’m excited about it. \u00c2\u00a0Passing union-supported card-check legislation<\/a>? \u00c2\u00a0Writing blank checks to failing car companies? I’m not jumping for joy. \u00c2\u00a0I will admit it beats the likely alternative – McCain would be worse. \u00c2\u00a0“Best alternative” and “good choice” are very different in this case, I fear.<\/p>\n

Obama wasn’t the big story for me. \u00c2\u00a0The biggest question this November was the decision to ban gay marriage in California. \u00c2\u00a052% of the state voted to prohibit gay marriage. \u00c2\u00a0They should be ashamed of themselves. \u00c2\u00a0For whatever reason, devoted gay couples can’t make health care decisions for each other, can’t make property decisions, and can’t fill out wills like straight couples can. \u00c2\u00a0It’s just nuts.<\/p>\n

I’d like to point out two other state questions:<\/p>\n

  1. Florida voted to retain a law that forbids Asian immigrants from owning land. \u00c2\u00a0The law is on the books and unenforceable. \u00c2\u00a0Florida could have repealed it, but 52% of the state thought it was a good idea<\/a>.<\/li>\n
  2. California voted to mandate bigger cages for chickens. \u00c2\u00a063% of the state voted for this one<\/a>. \u00c2\u00a0I’d love to meet the people who voted for hens but against gays.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
    I’m pissed but not freaked about these votes. \u00c2\u00a0I think the political tide is still moving. \u00c2\u00a0Gays will get to marry, in California and elsewhere. \u00c2\u00a0Asians will be allowed to own land. \u00c2\u00a0And the hens? \u00c2\u00a0I can’t say that I care.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
