{"id":75,"date":"2006-11-06T20:43:16","date_gmt":"2006-11-07T00:43:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dandunn.org\/blog\/archives\/75"},"modified":"2006-11-06T20:43:16","modified_gmt":"2006-11-07T00:43:16","slug":"voting-no-on-question-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dandunn.org\/blog\/2006\/11\/voting-no-on-question-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Voting No on Question 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I had a harder time deciding on this question, simply because the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sec.state.ma.us\/ele\/elepip\/pipidx.htm\">information<\/a> on it is so sparse.\u00c2\u00a0 In short, this question would permit a union (SEIU, the Service Employees International) to represent home-based child care providers in negotiating with the state.<br \/>\nI finally found some good arguments in the blogosphere, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bluemassgroup.com\">Blue Mass Group<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leftinlowell.com\">Left in Lowell<\/a>. I was particularly swayed by a commenter on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leftinlowell.com\/2006\/10\/23\/yes-on-question-three\/\">Left in Lowell<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The child-care providers aren&#8217;t employees.\u00c2\u00a0 They are small business owners.\u00c2\u00a0 They should have (and do have) a professional association.\u00c2\u00a0 That association can work with the state to guide regulation.\u00c2\u00a0 I don&#8217;t see how a union would be the right way for these businesses to negotiate with the state.\u00c2\u00a0 It would be one thing if these workers were asking to be represented by the SEIU.\u00c2\u00a0 I don&#8217;t see any evidence of that; I only see the SEIU aggressively trying to grow its membership.<br \/>\nThe Yes on 3 group spins the question as one that is good for children.\u00c2\u00a0 Their filing statement with the state closes with &#8220;Vote yes for our children\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s future.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 I can only draw another unflattering comparison to <a href=\"https:\/\/dandunn.org\/blog\/archives\/50\">Helen Lovejoy<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 I don&#8217;t see how unionization of these small business owners will improve child care.\u00c2\u00a0 I find it much easier to imagine higher costs with more regulation.<\/p>\n<p>I do not believe that this law will improve the lives of children or the lives of home-based child care workers.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m voting No on 3 tomorrow.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I had a harder time deciding on this question, simply because the information on it is so sparse.\u00c2\u00a0 In short, this question would permit a union (SEIU, the Service Employees International) to represent home-based child care providers in negotiating with the state.
